Pupils at a primary school were evacuated after a car drove into the building. Pictures from the scene, at Beacon Church of England Primary School on Heyworth Street, Everton, show a car has driven through the wall of a school building at about 8.40am.

A large police presence is stationed outside the school. A white car has crashed into the school and can be seen inside the building, the Liverpool Echo reported.

Merseyside Police said in a statement: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Everton following a road traffic collision at a school this morning, Monday 22 April. At around 8.30am, reports were received of a car in collision with The Beacon Primary School in Heyworth Street, Everton.

"The female driver of the car is being assessed at the scene. A passenger in the car sustained a minor injury. "No other injuries were reported and no children were present in the area of the collision. The building will be assessed for any structural damage.

"The school will be closed for the rest of the day and road closures are in place. Please avoid the area."

The incident occured minutes after children were dropped off at school at around 8.30am this morning. Parents told of their shock after witnessing the incident shortly after arriving at the school this morning.

Merseyside Police confirmed they were called to reports a car had crashed into the primary school. People are being asked to avoid the area while emergency services work at the scene.

Beacon Church of England Primary School on Heyworth Street in Everton teaches children from the ages of 2-11.
