A new film about iconic computer game The Sims is set to make its way to the big screen, with Barbie’s Margot Robbie tipped to be producing it. Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, which she runs with husband Tom Ackerly, Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr is said to be bringing the game to life.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, LuckChap will be producing the film alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. Kate Herron, best known for directing the first season of the Marvel series Loki, is set to head up the adaptation, as well as creating the screenplay with Briony Redman.
Electronic Arts, also known as EA, which published the game all those years ago is set to also be involved with the project. For anyone unfamiliar with The Sims, it’s now in its fourth year iteration, with the first game, Sims, launching back in 2000.
Many people have expressed excitement at hearing the possibility of a live-action 'Sims' movie. On X, CS11 put: "They made Barbie work really well. I’m interested to see how this turns out." AlexNever347 commented: "They better DIG DEEP for this. Been playing The Sims since I was 10 years old when the first one dropped."
Lilsimsie said: "You better not be lying to me about this." Justmarahere added: "Please they need to speak only simlish with no subtitles, only vibes." Mjarbo joked: "If there is not a scene where the stepladder to the pool is removed....WE WILL RIOT lol."
The Sims is a life simulation computer game where players play as an avatar which has changeable personality traits, skills, and relationships. You can control them as they go through the tasks of daily life, like making dinner, going to work and decorating a home.
The characters also have goals and aspirations. This gives the player the opportunity to navigate them to achieve those - or lead them to their deaths, if the player chooses to.
The game expanded with sequels (Sims 2, Sims 3 and Sims 4), as well as expansion packs which added a variety of features to the original base game. These included the additions of season, new homes, clothes, locations, universities, businesses, and new characters.
Some characters and storylines have been included in a number of the sequels, including the mysterious Goth family. According to Digital Spy, a fifth generation of the game is said to be in the works. Further details about storylines, characters and casting, and release date are yet to be determined.
A live-action drama film based on The Sims was first rumoured in 2007, with updates falling quiet until it was cancelled in 2019. But now, the rumours have been refuelled as LuckyChap and Barbie’s leading lady signing on.
