Marks and Spencer shoppers have shared their despair over the price of an item they say they can get for free elsewhere. On social media, people have hit out at Marks and Spencer for charging customers £2 for a 50g pot of Chip Shop Scraps.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, one shopper called Jason shared a picture of the tub alongside the caption: "*rubs temples*." In the picture, the label shows that scraps are priced at £40 per kilo.
The tweet has been viewed almost one million times. In the comment section, Jason added: "They were free when I were a kid.”
Others have shared their shock over the chip shop snack, with Ticky writing: “£40/kg for deep fried flour and water.” Snootworld claimed: “Chip shop scraps are now officially classed as a main meal for the meal deal combo."
ABM wrote: “Not just any ordinary scraps ... These are M&S scraps!” Weirdwolf said: “£40 per kilo of BATTER. Christ.” Kev penned: “£40 per kg of the stuff they'd chuck out? Excuse me whilst I sell bread crusts for a steal.”
However, this isn’t the first time Marks and Spencer's chippy snack has come under fire. The Chip Shop Scraps launched back in 2018, with an 80g pot being sold at £1.05.
Manchester Evening News reported shoppers had accused the shop of 'insulting the north'. One critic said: "Don’t know what’s worse, calling them ‘Scraps’ or charging for them!"
A spokesperson for M&S told the Manchester Evening News: “Our chip shop scraps have proved popular with customers up and down the country since launching back in 2018. Many enjoy as part of their chippy tea, and we also know some customers enjoy sprinkling across a variety of meals, including adding texture to a salad.”
Marks and Spencer has been approached for comment.
