Motorists who don't have driveways could benefit from a major cash boost following rule changes. The government is offering a £350 grant to drivers who don't have a drive - allowing them to save up to 75% off the cost of an electric car charger.
This expanded electric vehicle chargepoint grant is now available across the UK under new government guidance. For the first time, electric vehicle (EV) drivers without off-street parking can access this government grant.
The £350 grant, which covers up to 75% of the cost of buying and installing a charge point, is now open to those who own or rent and have suitable street parking. To install a cross-pavement charging solution, EV drivers will need permission from their local council. Applications can be made online, reports Birmingham Live.
Anthony Browne, the Minister for Technology and Decarbonisation, said: "This Government has a plan to help speed up the installation of EV charge points, which we're getting on and delivering."
The news has been welcomed by motoring organisations. Edmund King OBE, President of the AA, said: "Extending grants to those without off-street parking is a step in the right direction.
"I'm proud to be co-chairing the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Forum as I'm committed to helping consumers transition to zero-emission vehicles and an efficient, affordable, accessible charging infrastructure is key to that. I'm also confident that the UK's brilliant charging and automotive industry can deliver and play a key part in the UK's net zero ambitions."
Hugh Pickerill, who manages EV grants and infrastructure at the Energy Saving Trust, commented: "It's great to see this latest round of funding allocated to what will be effective projects to improve EV charging infrastructure across the country. Having begun engagement with the local authorities applying to the next round of applications, we're keen to start working more closely with them to assist in the development of their applications and to achieve excellence in project standard".
