Weather forecasters warn that the UK will be struck by another round of powerful winds today. Gusts of more than 50mph are expected to bash large parts of the country and the Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning until 10pm tonight (Monday, April 15).
The forecasters says delays on road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely throughout the day. Delays began early in the South West, after National Highways closed the M48 Severn Bridge and a transport ferry in Cornwall cancelled all its crossings for the day.
Coastal areas are likely to be the worst affected by the strong winds and gusts of more than 50mph have been predicted along the Somerset and North Somerset coastline. Bristol and Gloucestershire can expect to be hit by winds of around 40mph, according to current predictions.

The Met Office says: "A depression will move east just to the north of Scotland through Monday and will bring a swath of strong winds to Northern Ireland, Wales and much of England. Gusts of between 40 and 45 mph are expected widely inland with isolated gusts as high as 50 to 55 mph on exposed coasts and near to heavier showers. This is likely to lead to some disruption and longer journey times."
Forecasters say we can expect:
- It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves
- Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely
- Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
- Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
- Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
The warning came into effect at 6.25am today and will remain in place until 10pm. Large parts of England are included in the warning, as is all of Wales and Northern Ireland. It comes after a milder - and drier - weekend which followed a week of very high tides, flooding, power cuts and road closures.
