The traditional British fry-up is in danger of dying out as one in five young adults tuck into just “one or two” a year. Concern over its greasiness, preparation time and calorie content are the main reasons for its dwindling popularity.
In a bid to revive the classic meal, Breville launched the Greaseless Spoon Café – where the great English breakfast was cooked using their new air fryer. A poll of 1,000 adults aged 18 to 34 found 20 per cent enjoy the dish “every couple of months”.
And one in 10 have never had a Full English breakfast which – traditionally consists of bacon, egg, sausage, beans and toast. Almost four in ten said it’s too fatty or greasy, a third avoid it because of the calorie count and 31 per cent considered it to be too time-consuming to prepare.
But 70 per cent admitted they would be more inclined to tuck into the morning feast if these ‘icks’ could be overcome. Lydia Baker, Marketing Manager at Breville, who conducted the research via OnePoll, said: “There’s still time to save the iconic dish. It’s a beloved institution for a reason.
“Social media has spread an endless number of accounts giving advice on what’s ‘good’ and ‘bad’ to eat, with the humble fry-up often falling into the latter camp. But it’s perfectly possible to create a traditional fry up that’s a little more guilt-free and less hassle.”
Other reasons younger people rarely eat fried breakfasts include needing too many pots and pans to prepare it, with most fry-ups requiring three. Timing of getting all the ingredients ready at the same time is another frustration.
Ten Breville Halo Flexi Air Fryers were installed in a pop-up cafe, supplying plates of bacon, egg, sausage, mushroom, tomatoes, and toast.
Diners had the chance to experience a fry up made in under 15 minutes all in one air fryer, compared to using various pots & pans, and with fewer calories.
Zoe McClean, senior home economist at Breville, makers of the Halo Flexi Air Fryer said: “A fried breakfast is quite an involved process with lots of moving parts, which means there are lots of opportunities for improvement. The way you prepare something is almost as important as what you’re making”
