Former Bristol Rovers player Nick Anderton has provided an encouraging update on his health with the 27-year-old sharing that, after scans, there is "no sign of active disease" following his cancer treatment
Anderton was forced to retire from football at just 26 years of age, announcing that he was hanging up his boots back in April after being diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in July 2022, a rare form of bone cancer that affected his femur.
The fan favourite has posted updates throughout his treatment on his social media pages and provided the best yet on Friday morning.
Anderton wrote: "Not how I imagined my mid twenties to pan out but it is what it is. Never did I think a sore knee would turn out to be bone cancer. I don't think it's really possible to put in to words how the last year has been but I'm blessed to still be here battling on.
"Full knee along with 12cm of my femur replaced with metal. 28 weeks of chemotherapy & 36 weeks of another drug which is classed as an antibiotic. Close to 70 nights stayed in hospital, a few infections thrown in there just to keep me on my toes.
"My first lot of scans have come back with the best possible news I could have hoped for, no sign of active disease. This journey is by no means over as the cancer can return and I'm going to be checked every few months for the foreseeable."
The former Rovers left-back added: "I just wanted to let people know and more importantly thank everybody for everything over the last year. The messages I've received, the donations to the go fund me and the all round support has been unbelievable.
"I'm going to try and enjoy some normal life with my family now and make the best memories whilst trying to figure out what's next. "Thank you."
Anderton made 39 appearances for the Gas after joining on a free transfer from Carlisle United in July 2021 as they secured promotion back to League One at the first time of asking. The defender made himself a fan favourite for numerous reasons, particularly his performances on the pitch and celebrations following promotion.
The club have initiated numerous excellent fundraising initiatives to help their former player through his treatment such as players and staff shaving their heads back in January. Recently, manager Joey Barton set up a paywall feature on his X account with subscription fees received going to Anderton.
