Drivers are being told to sell their cars straight away if they hear a certain noise. A car expert says that one sign means it's time to sell your car.
Scotty Kilmer, who has been a mechanic for 56 years and has a massive following on YouTube, said: "Today I'm going to tell you when it's a good time to get rid of a used car. Now this one has a perfectly smooth running engine but the transmission occasionally gives a big clunk when it shifts."
He added: "Now it wouldn't do it for me in a half-hour drive so now is the time to get rid of it because fixing a 4x4 with an automatic can be a huge expense, so if you're going to sell a used car, sell it before it breaks down entirely. But just make sure you let them know what they're getting into."
The cost of changing a gearbox can be a lot, usually between £500 and £2,500. The type of car, model, and engine size will change how much it costs to replace, reports Birmingham Live.
Garages are likely to be able to find a reconditioned gearbox instead of a new one from the manufacturer, according to Moneybox. The gearbox is important because it moves the power from your engine to the wheels, making your car go.
The system uses a set of gears to control your car's speed and torque, ensuring the best performance in all driving conditions. The average cost for a small car can range from £800 to £1,500, including labour, warns Moneybox.
For Sedans, the cost is even higher - averaging between £1,000 to £2,000 - including labour. SUVs can cost between £1,500 to £3k, according to the experts' estimated cost range.
They also warn that vans can be more expensive. Motorists and drivers could pay anywhere between £2,000 and £4,000 for a van.
