As we mark the solemn anniversary of the devastating invasion that shook Ukraine two years ago, Bristol stands tall as a beacon of hope and compassion. In the face of adversity, our city has shown its true colours, extending a hand of friendship and solidarity to those in need.
The incredible generosity of more than 480 host households in Bristol is phenomenal - but Bristol City Council is calling upon those who have love in their hearts and space in their homes to join the movement.
Imagine the warmth of a Bristolian welcome – a comforting embrace that says: "You are safe here." For 480 households across our city, this isn't just a sentiment – it's a reality. These remarkable individuals have welcomed Ukrainian refugees into their homes, offering not only safety and comfort but also a sense of belonging in a time of uncertainty, adversity and heartache.
To each and every one of you, we say thank you. Your kindness knows no bounds, and your impact is immeasurable. By helping tackle homelessness on an individual level, you could help to address systemic issues and advocate for positive change in a much bigger way.
By becoming a host to somebody in need, you're not just providing shelter – you're preventing homelessness, reducing the need for temporary accommodation, and building bridges of understanding within our community. You're showing the world that Bristol is a place of compassion, where every person, regardless of background, is valued and welcomed with love and open arms.
Through the Bristol Homes for Ukraine Tenancy and Lodger schemes, landlords have played a vital role in providing homes for more than 140 Ukrainian households. This partnership, whether as resident landlords, private landlords, or companies, has made a tangible difference in the lives of those seeking refuge in our city. Together, we are reshaping the narrative, one home at a time.
But the hard work is far from over. The need for hosts for Ukrainians already in Bristol remains pressing, and Bristol City Council is calling on the community to rise to the occasion once again. The Homes for Ukraine programme is being extended, and with it comes an opportunity for us to continue our mission of compassion and solidarity.
The government has extended Host Thank-You Payments for up to three years, so whether you're a seasoned host or considering opening your doors for the first time, there has never been a better time to get involved. For every host you refer who is successfully matched, you'll receive £200 as a token of the council's appreciation as part of the Refer a Host initiative.
As a sponsor or host of a Ukrainian refugee, you will receive a monthly payment from the UK government as a thank you for hosting. You will get £350 a month during the first 12 months of a guest's stay, and £500 a month once a guest has been in the UK for 12 months. Bristol hosts also receive a cost of living top up - find out more here.
Let's show the world what it means to be a city of sanctuary, where compassion knows no bounds and kindness reigns supreme. Together, we can make a difference – one home, one heart at a time. Join us in building a brighter future for all.
