Jed Ward - 7

Another clean sheet to add to the tally for Ward but this one was probably more of his straightforward ones. The goalkeeper was forced into action on a few occasions and was particularly busy in the final stages as Cambridge looked to find a late equaliser but ultimately they managed just two shots on target.

Luca Hoole - 7

A crucial goal line clearance at the end was the right-back's highlight but he looked calm and composed at the back as he filled in for Jack Hunt who was absent due to personal reasons. The academy product is a player who particularly needs to impress his manager in order to secure his future at the club beyond this season and that was certainly a solid outing.

Connor Taylor - 8

Some vital blocks and interceptions coincided with comfort and composure on the ball that we haven't seen enough of lately from the centre-back. We're well aware of what he's capable of but we haven't quite seen that in recent matches but the 22-year-old certainly looked a lot more like his usual self. Additionally, at 22 Taylor would have been the eldest in that back-five and thus relied upon to command from the back which he certainly did with a clean sheet the cherry on top.

Elkan Baggott (off for James Connolly 64') - 7

Solid when he needed to be in the hour he played with Cambridge showing their threat mainly from set-pieces with limited danger coming from open play. Not as monstrous as he was at Cheltenham Town on the weekend but didn't necessarily need to be with the Gas dominating possession.

Harvey Vale - 7

Particularly excellent in the first half. Filling in at left-back again, the Chelsea loanee was extremely solid, winning duels and showing real dedication to the cause from a defensive perspective. In the final third, a couple of crosses went well wayward so a bit more composure was needed in that sense but a productive evening.

Jordan Rossiter (off for Kamil Conteh 50') - 8

An absolute engine in the middle of the park for the Gas once again, getting stuck in and consistently winning the ball back for Rovers in a dominant first half. Obviously, given his situation the midfielder had to be taken off after 50 minutes but it's been an outstanding return to football for the 27-year-old.

Antony Evans - 8

One of the midfielder's best performances for a couple of matches. We're all aware of Evans' ability striking a ball from long range but we haven't seen enough of those attempts lately. Tonight we did with his best opening coming in the early stages of the match with an effort dragged narrowly wide. However, the stand-in captain's individual highlight was threading through the pass to Luke Thomas which created the goal. Much more like it.

Luke Thomas - 8

Involved in the penalty incident, winning the ball up high before releasing Scott Sinclair and the winger had a good few shrewd moments like that, mainly in the first half where the Gas seemed to flex their offensive muscles more. A real handful for Cambridge to deal with and eventually got his deserved goal contribution with the assist for the winning goal.

Brandon Aguilera (off for Jevani Brown 73') - 7

A strong display from the Nottingham Forest loanee whose game had everything bar a goal contribution. The Costa Rican seemed to be involved in the vast majority of Rovers' flurries forward, particularly in the first half and produced some tidy interplay with his teammates. Just couldn't find the breakthrough.

Scott Sinclair (off for Harry Vaughan 64') - 7

Looked extremely bright in spells in the first half with the winger's pace creating all sorts of issues while his movement helped win the penalty. On another day the 35-year-old could have found himself with a goal or an assist.

Chris Martin - 7

The headline for Martin looked as though it was going to relate to the penalty miss but the striker had made himself extremely useful at both ends, with defensive headers from set-pieces and dropping deep to release his teammates before making his own run towards the penalty box. He'll know he has to score the spot kick but he gobbled up the next chance that fell to him, securing the three points by scoring from point-blank range after an excellent pick out from Thomas.

Substitutes:

Kamil Conteh (on 50') - 6

Kept the Gas solid in the middle of the park and demonstrated impressive composure on the ball in certain moments that could have become hairy. Good 40 minutes.

Harry Vaughan (on 64') - 6

Came on with a point to prove and certainly looked hungry to make an impact, chasing balls and putting pressure on defenders. It didn't quite fall for him but a decent effort from the bench.

James Connolly (on 64') - 6

Made an important block late on and helped Rovers to get the important clean sheet.

Jevani Brown (on 73') - 6

Smart dummy in the build-up to the goal and forced a decent save, although it did look as though his effort was going wide.
