Barbie director Greta Gerwig has revealed what it would take for her to make another film about the iconic doll. Speaking at the West Hollywood Edition, where Gerwig was honoured as one of Time’s Women of the Year, she told excited fans about the possibility of making another Barbie film.
Explaining the one very specific condition that would see her return to Barbie, she said: "My North Star is 'What do I deeply love? What do I really care about? Like, 'What's the story underneath this story?'
"And I think with 'Barbie', the story underneath this story was I loved Barbie. I remember going to Toys 'R' Us and looking at Barbies and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that's the story, that's the generational story… I'm always trying to find those undertows."
So, it appears whether or not she'll continue to the Mattel doll's universe depends on if she can find an 'undertow', or subplot to drive the film. When asked about a sequel she said: "If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don't find an undertow, there's no more."
While Gerwig didn't give a definitive yes or no, she admitted: "It's something that I loved making so much. And I loved the world that we built so much and all of the actors and the idea of getting to be with that group of people again is very exciting."
While Barbie 2 looks miles away from happening just now, Gerwig has signed up for her next project. Back in July 2023, it was confirmed by The New Yorker that she would be directing and writing at least two films based on The Chronicles of Narnia books for Netflix.
The last film based on The Chronicles of Narnia was released in 2010, completing a trilogy which started in 2005 which grossed $1.5billion at the box office. Gerwig now has her work cut out recapturing the magic of the original trilogy and books which inspired them.
